St. Paul (Northland's NewsCenter) - On Saturday, the Eveleth-Gilbert girls hockey team fell to the Breck School 6-4 in the Class A third place game of the MN State Girls Hockey Tournament.
Breck jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period, before the Golden Bears would claw back into the game. Eveleth-Gilbert tied the game, which was played at Xcel Energy Center, at 4-all early in the third period, on a power play goal from Kaylen Erchul. But Breck scored the final two goals in the period for the victory. Eveleth-Gilbert goals were scored by Erchul, Amanda Arbogast, Katie Kingston, and Kayla Moe.
Arbogast, who was named the Class A Herb Brooks award winner, and the lone member on the all-state team from Eveleth-Gilbert, collected 3 goals and 3 assists in the tournament. Kayla Moe had one goal and five assists during the three games. Golden Bear junior goalie Vicky Fossland had 34 saves in Saturday's game, and 87 saves for the tournament.
Eveleth-Gilbert finished just their second appearance at the state tournament. On Wednesday night, the Golden Bears earned their first ever win at state, by knocking off Red Wing 5-2. On Friday, Eveleth-Gilbert was shutout by defending champion Warroad 9-0.
The Golden Bears finished the season at (20-10).
