Ely, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Four seasons ago, the Ely football team had just two wins and hadn't been to the state tournament since 1988 until the Timberwolves hired Brian Lamppa went on to win back-to-back 9-man section championships.

Ely defeated Floodwood last Friday to advance to Thursday's state semifinals at the Metrodome. Lamppa knows his team wouldn't be there without the play and leadership of his seniors.

"I'm very proud of them," Lamppa said. "Our senior leadership is outstanding. We've had some sophomore step up this year. We only have one junior, and he plays a lot for us. We're led by our seniors. They're just an excellent group, and they've been with me four years since I've been in Ely."
