Superior, WI (Northland's NewsCenter) --- 96 boats took the water for Saturday's Dragon Boat Festival in Superior, and many of them held local Northland athletes.

The UMD women's hockey team had a boat in the final of their division, placing second a year after winning the event.

The Superior Spartans football team also had a boat entered, as did the UWS women's soccer and volleyball teams.

They said it was a great team-building exercise as they begin their respective seasons.

"We wanted to do something for team bonding to get people to know each other a little better," UWS senior and Proctor native Andrea McKay said. "We are just hanging out, having a fun day. It's a nice break from preseason."
