Deerwood, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- NNCNOW.com is conducting a summer-long tour of some of the area's best golf courses and introducing you to the signature hole at these courses --- up this week is Cuyuna Rolling Hills Golf Course in Deerwood, Minn.
Just before you make the turn at Cuyuna Rolling Hills, you'll run into the course's signature hole -- the 395 yard par four ninth.
"It's a unique hole in the fact that you have multiple ways to play it. It goes to our clubhouse," general manager Terry Thompson said. "There is a pond in front of the green, and it leads to very scenic view of our course."
As you talk to him, though, it becomes clearer clearer that Thompson won't mince words when asked how tough #9 really is.
"This is a very difficult hole, one of our more difficult holes just because of having the pond and layup," he said. "Even though it's 395 yards, it plays longer than 395. It probably plays about 420."
That said, he's a nice enough guy that when you ask him for a tip on how to play his course's signature hole, he'll give you some useful advice.
"The tip I would give is try to hit to the left side of the fairway," Thompson elaborated. "You'll tend to get a little better bounce and roll. You've got to play the green. You want to be short of the flag because the green is sloped down towards the pond, and if you're on top of the green sometimes you'll have a harder time stopping your putt."
