Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Even with a foot of fresh snow on Friday, thousands packed Superior Street on Saturday morning for the running of the 24th Annual Fitger's 5K in downtown Duluth.

Joe Moore, 29, of Minneapolis set a course record, finishing the 3.1 mile race in 14 minutes and 53 seconds, becoming the first person to break the 15 minute mark. He also won the 2012 Park Point Five-Miler.

On the women's side, former UMD All-American and Ellsworth, Wisc. native, Morgan Place crossed the finish line at the 17:53 mark. It was her first time running the event.

Almost 2,000 people registered for the event, setting an event record while just over 1,500 finished the race.

The event raised about $20,000 to benefit the Young Athletes Foundation, a Grandma's Marathon program focused on the promotion and development of young athletes in the Northland.
