Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) -- Greg Carlson was chosen to lead the St. Scholastica football team six seasons ago in its first year and during that time, he led the Saints to 39 total wins and three straight NCAA Division III tournaments.

On Friday afternoon, Carlson spoke out for the first time since the school announced his retirement on Thursday.

"If I can't give 100 percent every time I'm at work then you have to second guess yourself and say okay, what's going on here. That's part of it. Just slowing down a bit and not short changing the program."

As for finding a replacement, Carlson will have no say in his replacement but hopes it's someone to carry on the winning tradition both on and off the field.

"More than anything, it's just maintaining the character of the kids that are in the program. One of the things I hope that we've shown is you can win with good kids."
