Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The St. Scholastica football team will open the 2013 season this Saturday with a non-conference road game against Whitworth, with that team having beaten the Saints last season in Duluth, Minn.

With the Saints now competing for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III tournament, head coach Greg Carlson says he's free to schedule top-tier out-of-conference opponents.

"I like the AQ because it allows you to grab a quality opponent and play them in a non-conference game," Carlson said, "and if you lose it doesn't really affect you getting into the playoffs."

Saturday's game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and will be played in Spokane, Wash.
