Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- Hermantown, Minn. resident Darrell Nelson added two more dirt track racing championships to his ever-expanding list this past Friday --- he won both the late model and modified championships at AMSOIL Speedway in Superior, Wis.

Those two are added to a large number, but Nelson says he hasn't been keeping count of his track titles or even the years he's been racing.

"I don't know, 25 plus years. I don't even know. I quit counting," Nelson said when asked about his time behind the wheel.

"I have to believe we've won a couple here, a bunch at Proctor," he continued, now talking championships. "I don't know if I've ever won at Hibbing, and Cedar Lake a few. I'm an old guy so we've been around a little bit. We've hit a few."

"That's what we work for," pit crew member Mike Meger said. "It makes you be the most consistent person. That's what it's about I guess."

Being consistent and clean on the track is something in which Nelson takes a lot of pride.

"I just like to put a good show on," he said. "I want people to talk during the week and say, 'Oh boy, he did a good job. He was clean.' I like that more than anything."

"We have a driver that never gives up," Meger said of Nelson. "A lot of people settle for the spot they're in. He doesn't quit. It makes a big difference."

And as long as Nelson's wife has a say in it, he won't be quitting for years to come.

"[We] talked last year, and she won't let me hang it up," Nelson said, laughing. "I have to go another five, she says. I have to listen to her because she's the boss."

Lucky for Nelson's wife, the racing gene may have been passed on to the next generation.

"I have a 14-year-old that doesn't like to miss it, and I have a three-year-old up-and-coming that will probably enjoy it too," Nelson said.
