UMD's Heikkinen Named Best Lineman in DII

Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) senior offensive lineman was named on Monday the recipient of the 2012 Gene Upshaw Award, which is given out each year to the best lineman in Division II football.

The Duluth, Minn. native has been a staple on the offensive line during his four years at UMD, starting a school-record 54 straight games and helping the team to an overall record of (47-7).

Heikkinen has been named to four All-American teams following his senior season with the Bulldogs, a season in which the team posted a program-record 46.5 points per game.

The senior is the Bulldogs' first-four time all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honoree, being named three times to the first team (2010-12) and once being given honorable mention (2009).

For being named the winner, Heikkinen will receive a trophy in the likeness of Gene Upshaw and will also get an invitation to particiapte in the East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Jan. 19.
