Colorado Springs, CO (NNCNOW.com) --- The University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) men's hockey team will start a new chapter of program history this weekend as it plays the first-ever weekend series as part of the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC).

This season will mark the first since 1965 the Bulldogs have played in anything but the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), which UMD made the decision to leave to becoming a founding institution of the NCHC.

"It's a little bit weird," Hermantown, Minn. native and UMD junior captain Adam Krause said. "Growing up here, you know that the WCHA has such a rich history, but starting a new league will be pretty special. I think this new league will have a good history itself --- championship teams are going to come from it."

UMD will play its inaugural game as part of the NCHC on Friday night on the road against Colorado College, with that set to start at 8:37 p.m. CT and be broadcast nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
