Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Duluth City Council voted unanimously, 9-0, on Monday night to award Astroturf, LLC the contract for the purchase and installation of an artificial surface as part of the $2.3 million Wade Stadium renovation project.
The plan will cost $554,980 and calls for a fully artificial field, including the pitcher's mound and batters boxes, and it marks the first major decision about the renovation project since the state bonding money was granted this past May.
The Duluth Huskies are the major tenant of Wade Stadium in the summer, but that team's general manager Craig Smith says the renovation project will allow the city more flexibility with the space.
"Whatever they decide they want to host in this venue, they'll be able to do it," Smith said, "and it'll be really a multi-use facility like it was designed to be."
There is not yet a specific date for the start of work on the renovation, but it will come sometime after the conclusion of the Huskies' season in early to mid August.
