Superior, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- Cody Wolkowski and family hail from Thunder Bay, Ontario -- but even with his mailing address in another country, he still considers AMSOIL Speedway in Superior, Wis. his home racetrack.
"We put on about 600 miles every weekend. That's between Friday and Saturday night and then back home," Wolkowski said. "Superior is actually the closest track that we have to Thunder Bay. It's still about a four hour drive, but I've had some pretty good races here at the speedway. It's been pretty good to me."
At 22 years old, Wolkowski is among the youngest crop of regulars in Superior, but his experience level doesn't match his age -- this is his sixth full season at AMSOIL.
"My parents got me into go-karts when I was young," Wolkowski said. "They had helped out with a few guys when they were a bit younger, so I started off on that and had it ever since."
"It" in that context is a love of racing, win or lose. Taking the checkers, though, is a definite plus for any driver.
"There's nothing else quite like it," he said of winning a feature race. "It's pretty exciting when you know all that hard work you put into it and all the hours spent was worth it in the end."
Also worth the hours, both at the track and on the road, are the friendships Wolkowski has developed at his home away from home here in the Northland.
"Usually when you're around for a few years, you get to know everyone," Wolkowski said. "Everyone comes out every weekend, and we try to help each other out when we can. It's a pretty good place to be."
