Sochi, Russia (NNCNOW.com) --- There will be five connections to the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) on Thursday morning when the United States plays Canada for the gold medal in women's hockey at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games.
Team USA will have two former UMD assistant coaches in Julie Chu and Robb Stauber, while Team Canada will have three former Bulldogs players in Caroline Ouellette, Haley Irwin, and Jocelyne Larocque.
The United States beat Sweden 6-1 on Monday morning in the semifinal round and Canada beat Switzerland 3-1, all setting up a rematch of of the 2010 gold medal final at the Vancouver Games.
This year's championship game is scheduled to be played on Thursday at 11:00 a.m CT, directly after the third place game at 6:00 a.m. CT.
The bronze medal game will also have Northland representation, with former UMD players Kim Martin, Jenni Asserholt, and Pernille Winberg playing for Sweden while current UMD defenseman Lara Stalder and current St. Scholastica forward Nina Waidacher will play for Switzerland.
