Proctor, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) -Players from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Canada are taking to the ice in the 2012 Ice Breakers hockey tournament this weekend.

Local restaurants and hotels are reaping the benefits of the tournament as well, as three thousand players, coaches, and family members make their way to the area...perhaps softening the blow of the late start to the winter tourism season in the Twin Ports.

Volunteers with the tournament say they look forward to this tournament every year and say it may be close in size...and importance economically...as the largest sporting event the area sees every year.

"To have close to 3 thousand people come for a weekend...I think someone once said it could be the second largest sporting event next to Grandma's Marathon for Duluth. So it's quite an event...quite a draw to Duluth," said Amy Schintz, a volunteer with the tournament.

Admission to all the games is free.
