Love knows no age. And sometimes, it doesn't even show up until much later in life. On June 2nd, an 80 year-old Superior native finally walked down the aisle... for the very first time.
Yesterday, Mary Kay McGill became Mrs. Leighty.
"we feel very lucky," says Mary Kay.
And at the age of 86, her sweet-heart, Dick Leighty, says "lucky" doesn't begin to describe it.
"I can't do it in one word. I'm lucky. I'm moved. I'm anxious."
Anxious because today is their wedding day.
And for Mary Kay, it was her first time walking down the aisle.
"There wasn't anybody in particular that I felt I had to belong to, until this fine fella came along," she says.
Although Dick and Mary Kay lived only minutes apart in Superior for most of their lives, it was here at the Westwood Assisted Living Community that they met just a couple of years ago.
Their fast friendship soon developed into something so much more, and that's when dick, a widower from a 49 year marriage, popped the question. But this time, he had to leave out an important part.
"If I got down on one knee, I would not be able to get up," Dick says.
And as Mary Kay enters into a lifetime commitment with her prince charming, she sends a message that it's never too late to find love.
"The amazing story is, it can happen at any age, and it's wonderful. And that's the way it should be, whether your 20 or 80."
Mary Kay says her only reservation about marrying Dick was his pet cat. But she says, although not a cat person, she's learning to live with it.
