DULUTH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - Duluth Public Schools are about to open their doors.
This year middle school students will be walking into new facilities at Lincoln Park Middle School and renovated facilities at Ordean East Middle School, which are part of the district's long range facilities plan.
While the outside construction of the newest school on Lincoln Park's hillside could be seen from I-35 for several months, teachers are now constructing their rooms inside.
"Just trying to get my classroom ready, taking a look at schedules and how many students are in each classroom," said Lana Puttkammer, an 8th grade algebra teacher.
Classrooms and science labs are equipped with the newest gadgets.
"Every one of the classrooms are set up with a Smart Board so that you know, they have the state of the art technology in every classroom at their hands," said Denise Clairmont, the Lincoln Park Middle School Principal.
One of the principal's favorite aspects of the school is its view, which you can see from the media center, many classrooms and from the commons.
"You look out the window, behind me and it's like you can see all the bridges and the water, the river, the lake," said Clairmont.
That concept of water also flows through the building.
"The signs look like water and, you know, the pattern in the flooring looks like the wave movement too," said Clairmont.
There's also the school's sports and fitness facilities, a pool area with bleachers, a large gymnasium, a weight room, and outside, there's turf.
"All the soccer teams in the City of Duluth and UWS have been using it," said Clairmont.
She says it's a new space students are already excited about.
"The few that I've see come in, just walked through with parents. They have just walked in and like 'Wow, this is amazing. This is so cool.'
She says the teachers are happy too.
"Thrilled, totally thrilled," said Puttkammer.
Both the Lincoln Park Middle School and Ordean East Middle School will open on Monday.
There is a ribbon cutting for both middle schools Thursday, that is part of both schools' Family & Student back-to-school nights.
There's also an open house for the public scheduled for Sunday, September 16 from 1 to 5 p.m.
