Duluth, MN It was an all too familiar scene for firefighters and witnesses on scene alike...after a fire broke out in the basement laundry room of the Kozy Bar and Apartments.
Acting Assistant Fire Chief Jarry Keppers commented on the fire departments reaction to the call.
"We responded. It took 90 seconds to arrive on the scene, and determined that there was a fire in the laundry area. We put it out, than we did a search of the building to make sure that no one was inside and found no one inside".
The search of the building proved to be a dangerous one.
With two previous fires in the same building, the search had to be preformed with extra caution due to the unknown conditions of the structure.
Around 60 people living in the Kozy apartments were without a home after the first fire back in November of 2010.
The second happened in March, of 2011. Keppers tried to answer the questions that remain such as what happens to the Kozy building...
"The city is working with the building owner Eric Ringsred on getting the building brought up to code. I'm not sure where that all stands right now".
and what can be done to prevent this from happening again?
"The best thing is for a vacant building like this is to keep it secured, which in fact this was suppose to have been secured and from what I understand it was. So im not quite sure of how this fire got started, but if people keep their eyes open and call in when they see a problem that would sure be helpful to prevent this kind of issue".
The fire is still under investigation with more information planned to be released on Sunday.
Officials say there is nothing that can prove the two previous fires and this latest one are connected.
