Bayfield WI, (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Community members from the Northland are putting the 51st Bayfield Apple Festival on the top of their to do list this weekend.
The apple fest has been called the "Best Festival in Wisconsin" by the states travel magazine.
Like the old wise tale says, an apple a day keeps the doctor away.
For thousands of people visiting Bayfield Wisconsin, they are living up to that motto and then some.
"We love the apples, we love the apple brats, we have to have apple tort every year we come and we have to buy shoes at Joanne's every year," a festival participant said.
The endless booths have vendors serving everything from freshly picked honey crisp apples to apple pie to...
"We got pork chops on a stick, brats, hot dogs, we got sweet corn—some on the roaster back there," a booth volunteer said.
That's right, not everything at the festival is limited to the delicious hanging fruit.
But no matter what is sold, its usually coupled with an apple.
"We got apples across the street. Carlines, mackintosh, honey crisp," a booth volunteer said.
Each year there is always something new to try, and one of the hot new items this year are the Wapple Cones.
"They're amazing," a festival participant said.
So, what is a Wapple Cone?
It's starts with a homemade fresh waffle cone, then a scoop of cheesecake.
"And then we put hot apple pie filling in it with caramel and streusel on the top," a Wapple Cone manager said.
...Which makes this a treat on a cold day like this.
The Wapple Cone recipe is an original find.
"We worked on it for about a year—kind of playing with recipes—getting everything ready," a Wapple Cone manager said.
And if there is one thing you can't miss while you're in Bayfield, the turtle Sunday is a must.
"We're about the only ones that do a turtle Sunday," a booth volunteer said.
Or for the ladies in town from as far as Iowa, they come every year for the...
"Apple tort with cinnamon ice cream," a festival participant said.
The event ends on Sunday at 5:00 P.M.
The Bayfield Apple Festival Parade kicks off tomorrow at 2:00 P.M.
