Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) --- Duluth Firefighter Erik Simonson made his bid for Representative Gauthier's District 7B Minnesota House seat official.

Simonson, an Assistant Duluth Fire Chief and labor activist, says he plans to stand as a write in candidate to maintain a strong labor voice in the western half of Duluth.

At a conference outside the Lake Superior Zoo Simonson thanked Representative Gauthier for his service, but said he did not condone the elected official's recent behavior.

If elected, Simonson said he will focus on issues such as Local Government Aid and Homestead Credit Tax Relief.

During the upcoming special session, Simonson says the state government should focus on long term recovery plans with cities following the floods.

"The residents of this district deserve a Representative who will focus on the issues, represent the people, and work closely with other area legislators to ensure the best possible outcome for Duluth," Simonson said.

Meanwhile, this weekend Duluth City Councilor Jay Fosle announced he will also mount a write in campaign for Gauthier's seat but will not affiliate with any party.
