Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) -- Duluth beat out six cities in order to win the title of Best Outdoor Town in America by Outside Magazine for 2014, and visitors from near and far say the city is deserving of the title.
"There's all kids of things to do from kayaking to boating, to in the winter months, downhill skiing to cross country skiing to snowmobiling. Most deserving, I think to be the best outdoor city in the United States," said Tim West from Maple Grove, Minnesota.
Outside Magazine does the contest every year, and this year it had more voters than ever before.
"It was huge," said Jonah Ogles, Associate Editor for Outside Magazine. "We are still kind of in shock at how many people voted in this thing."
Magazine editors decided to try a bracket style competition and they say Duluth was ahead from the start.
"In previous years we would get about 20,000 votes total across all the towns over the entire month of the contest. In the first round, Duluth had more than that just for Duluth," said Ogles.
Duluth continued that momentum all the way through to the finish beating out Provo Utah with 66,758 votes over Provo's 54,875
David Ross, president of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce, said the voting is a reflection of how proud people are of Duluth.
"This is just the most recent example of how we view ourselves as not only one of the best in our region but in the nation," said Ross.
So whether you are on the Lakewalk or enjoying the sites from Hawk Ridge, many agree Duluth is deserving of Best Outdoor Town in America.
"I definitely give it a thumbs up," said Jim Streich, who is visiting from Springfield, Minnesota.
Outside Magainze will follow up with an article highlighting both of the final towns in its September issue.
