Grand Rapids, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A Grand Rapids school is receiving state recognition.

Robert J. Elkington Middle School is the only middle school in the state to receive the 2012 Minnesota School of Excellence award.

The school was chosen by the Minnesota Elementary School Principal's Association for its leadership, community engagement and other factors.

Principal Brent Brunetta says the award has a lot to do with the school's students and staff.

"I think it has everything to do with the quality of programs that we have in place, the dedication of our staff, the commitment of our parents and community and we have an excellent student body," said Brunetta.

Six elementary schools in the state also received excellence awards.
