Hayward, WI (NNCNOW.COM) --- An athlete from Hayward will represent The United States in the 2013 Special Olympic Winter Games in South Korea.

It's the first time this season 24-year-old Jason Suino has been able to strap on his ski's.

"We haven't had snow for a while, and I feel really great back in the ski's again," he said.

Suino will compete in three Cross Country Skiing Events, a 10K and 7K skate-ski freestyle race, as well as a relay race.

The last three months has been dedicated to strength and endurance training.

"He has a heart of gold in many ways, he will just work out until he just drops, which is important when you are training for an event," Rhonda Rady, Suino's Personal Trainer said.

Suino hits the gym with Rady twice a week to work on his core and posture.

Before the snow fell, he'd been training daily with his Coach Morse on skate-skies.

He also recently started training with the high school cross country ski team.

"They will be doing time trials and developing the techniques on how to get up the hills more efficiently," Ethel Morse, Suino's Ski Coach said.

The first week in December, Suino will meet and train with his teammates at the old olympic site near Lake Placid in New York.

"I'm proud of myself," Suino said. [I will] support my town of Hayward and Wisconsin and my whole country."

Members of the Northland community are proud of Suino too; numerous people and small businesses have donated gear and money to help him make it to the games.

"I'm really happy and I really appreciate what they are doing for me," Suino said.

His love for the sport will not stop after the Olympic games.

Suino plans to compete in the Kortolopet and Birkie in Hayward's 40th annual American Birkebeiner.

"Hopefully I can do good in the Birkie and probably ski some more after the Berkie and have fun for a little bit before the snow melts," he said.

Suino's dad and ski coach Ethel plan to accompany him to the Special Olympic Games.

If you'd like to make a donation to help Suino with the costs of travel to the Special Olympic games, an account is set up at the Hayward Community Credit Union.
