Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - The cold temperatures have many of us making a quick dash from our home to car and visa versa...but some community members don't let weather get in the way of their outdoor activities.
Shelter, fire, food, and keep moving.
Those are the top four recommendations from a doctor at St. Luke's Medical Center in Duluth.
Mild indications of Hypothermia include just feeling cold and shivering to more severe conditions such as numbness, feeling clumsy and confused, and hot sensations.
Infants, young children, and the elderly are most at risk for hypothermia.
Mild stages occur when the body reaches a temperature of 95 degrees.
If the body lowers any more, the level of hypothermia will be severe.
"Physical activity is a great way to generate heat. So, you keep the exposed areas of your body covered and keep moving. Walking briskly, rubbing your hands, stomping your feet. All of those things I think are potentially helpful," Dr. Nick Van Deelen, from St. Luke's Hospital, said.
Dressing for the cold is also essential.
That means covering the areas of the body that are prone to freezing such as your nose, hands, ears, and neck.
Van Deelen says in addition to dressing warm, keep your cell phone with you, incase an accident does occur.
