When the Northland is in the grip of winter, many have to say goodbye to their favorite summer time activities.

But thanks to a new business in Superior, volleyball doesn't have to be among those activities.

600 teams that play volleyball during the summer months in our region now have the opportunity to enjoy the activity indoors at the Mariner Mall in Superior.

The owner got the idea after seeing similar facilities across the nation.

"After driving down there and seeing that they had these great volleyball facilities but no food or beverage during the time frame I thought what a great way to tie the two together and try to bring it up to the Northland where we have a strong volleyball community," says Bruce Thompson.

This will be the only facility in the area offering indoor volleyball and a food and alcoholic beverage option.

The sand has been fully distributed and final reinforcement for the nets is under construction.

"The sand is warming up it feels pretty good, it doesn't feel cold right now and it's going to feel a lot warmer by the time Sunday comes around," Thompson informs.

Thompson says all levels of players are welcome to participate in the leagues.

"Absolutely no skill level required. For recreation, there are quite a few people that are competitive in the rec league and as you get into the advance levels that's when you see the abilities improve and the competitiveness go up to the next level."

So if you are interested in participating, Thompson says...

"You can go to the website which is Superiorsands. Com or your can send us an email at superiorsandsvolleyball at gmail.com.

Bringing the summer to Northlanders year round.

"If you don't ski or snowboard or ice fish this is a nice warm escape to get into the sand and stay active and do the things that you do during the summer months," he adds.

The sand will be ready for play Sunday, January 5th.
