(NNCNOW.com) --- Nearly one-in-three robberies involve cell phone theft, according to law enforcement statistics.

Now people who have their cell phones stolen may soon be able to get some help from the federal government.

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar has introduced a "Kill Switch" law, to give victims of cell phone theft the ability to wipe all personal information from the device.

The Kill Switch would also render the phone inoperable to thieves.

Klobuchar says it would help to deter criminals who intend to illegally resell the devices.
