Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - According to the NRDC, Minnesota Power's Boswell coal–powered plant is number 24 on a list of the top 25 worst Great Lakes Region coal–fired power plants.

Ex–cel Energy's Sherburne County Generating Station comes in as number five.

This latest report comes just ahead of a major U.S. Senate vote that, if passed, according to the NRDC, would all but eliminate the EPA's authority to clean up mercury, and other toxic air pollutants.

"Not only would the standards be eliminated if this vote is successful, but EPA would further be handcuffed from issuing substantially similar replacement standards at any time in the future," said NDRC Director of the Clean Air Program, John Walke.

The deadline to pass the legislation is June 18th, but could happen as early as next week.
