DULUTH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - With the freezing temperatures looming over us, more northlanders are applying for assistance to pay their heating bills.

More than 10,000 applications for the federal Energy Assistance Program have come in from families in St. Louis, Cook and Lake counties.

Each applicant gets on average a $500 grant based in part on income.

So far this winter, the program has seen more applicants than last year, due to both more families falling into situations of need, and rising energy costs.

The program director encourages people to get their applications in as soon as possible.
