La Pointe, WI (NNCNOW.com)-- According to the Ashland County Sheriff's Department, Dr. Richard Renwick, 63, from La Crosse and his brother Bruce Renwick, 58, from Waunakee are dead following a weekend plane crash on Madeline Island.

The Dane County Medical Examiners office officially confirmed the identities Monday. Dr. Richard Renwick was the pilot of the plane.

Around 6:34 p.m., on Saturday, a plane crash was reported at the Madeline Island Airport. Crews responded to a single-engine plane engulfed in flames.

Authorities say the aircraft was attempting to land and went into the wooded area short of the runway. The plane went down in a wooded area. The two men killed were the only people in the plane.

Eyewitnesses that we spoke with say they saw a huge plume of black smoke near the airport, shortly after the crash.

Sunday, investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are on the scene. The plane was a single-engine Piper Comanche.
