Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- With the warmer weather comes the increased presence of motorcyclists out on the road.
Last year's early spring saw an increase in motorcycle crashes
This year that number continues to rise.

The Minnesota State patrol and other authorities have teamed up in July to enforce motorcycle safety.

"We're ramping up on motorcycle safety because we want to save lives,"said Captain Steve Stromback with the Minnesota State Patrol.

After two fatal motorcycle crashes in Duluth and Pine County on Thursday, that message is all the more important.

"Normally what we hope to be a joyous weekend and celebration, too many families have already been impacted by fatal crashes," said Stromback.

So far this year there have been 152 fatal crashes..21 of them were motorcyclists.

"It's speed, impairment, and not wearing protective equipment," said Stromback.

Tony Bianchi, salesman at RJ Sports & cycle helps motorcyclists get prepared to hit the road w/ protective equipment.

"helmets, gloves, jackets, eye protection," said Bianchi,.

The responsibility doesn't just lie with bikers...motorists are urged to check their blind spots and keep an eye out for bikers.

"Expect it and look for it, their smaller so you might not see it right away so look," said Stromback.

Bianchi is a frequent rider and stresses the importance of safety and awareness on the roads.

"It's going to save lives and prevent a lot of injuries," said Bianchi.

He also doesn't want the fear of crashes to stop others from the motorcycle experience.

"It's like nothing else, you get a whole different picture of cruising down the street," said Bianchi.

Lake Superior College offers basic, and experienced rider safety courses that will be offered through September.
