Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com)-- -Christmas may be over, but the holiday shopping season continued Thursday as many retailers geared up for the day after Christmas crowds and sales.

It's promising news for retailers as the National Retail Federation predicts sales will grow this year by nearly four percent.

According to the National Retail Federation, the day after Christmas is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Shoppers were out in full force Thursday at the Miller Hill Mall, many finally doing a little buying for themselves.

"American Eagle, Aerie, Oh I do have a Victoria's Secret Gift Card," said Monica Gay.

"My mom got me a gift card so we're looking to go into the mall so we'll what I can get. I'm looking for some Packer stuff," said Joey Norton, who was in town for the holidays from Yuma, Arizona.

Analysts are calling the 20-13 holiday season the most competitive since the 2008 recession. Retailers are luring shoppers back in by slashing prices and offering deep discounts at the end of the holiday season. The National Retail Federation says the holiday season represents as much as twenty to forty percent of annual sales.
While many were redeeming gift cards, others were waiting in line for a different reason.

"We came shopping hoping to find some really great deals you know after Christmas sales and make some returns and exchanges," said Gay.

"I had some returns to do from Christmas shopping earlier," said Julie Salmon, of Moose Lake

"Just doing some returns and shopping," Langley Hayman.

Stores opened up early Thursday to get ready for the rush of shoppers returning or exchanging those gifts that just weren't the perfect fit.

According to Mastercard, the last week of December makes up 15 percent of Holiday sales, and exchanges will make up the bulk of that percentage.

According to retailers, keeping the receipt and paying close attention to the allotted return period are the top ways to ensure your return will be hassle free
