US Navy Promotes "USS Minnesota" Submarine in Duluth

Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - The new sub is the third U.S. Navy ship named for the state of Minnesota, and the first since 1907.

Construction began in February, 2008 and is expected to be completed in 2013.

The Executive Officer of the sub, along with some crew members paid a visit to Duluth Mayor Don Ness while in town to take in the upcoming Airshow.

They say that the pride Minnesotans take in having the sub named after their state is evident.

"We have some pretty strong ties with the community. We met with some veterans earlier today, and some submarine veterans yesterday. I can tel the people we met with are pretty excited about having a ship with Minnesota on it," said Lt. Commander John Witte, who is the Executive Officer on The Minnesota.

The 2 billion dollar vessel will have a 135 member crew and weigh 7,800 tons.

The Navy is sponsoring a contest to design the insignia that crew members will wear on their uniforms. For more information on how to enter that contest, you can check this link out:
