Virginia, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Virginia's new mayor was sworn into office Tuesday.

The city council appointed Louis Russo to fill the mayor's position during last week's meeting.

Former Mayor Steve Peterson stepped down in September, citing time constraints with his other job.

Russo said that while he was anticipating retiring from his career in public service when his term as city councilor ended, he is honored to serve as mayor for the next two years.

"I thought it was time for somebody else to take over, but when the opportunity came to be mayor, who could turn that down?" said Mayor Russo.

Carl Barnazelli will be filling Russo's vacant Council seat. He was elected to the seat in November and was sworn in early to the position in order to fill the vacancy.
