Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - On slushy, icy, snowy days like today, its important to use caution when driving, but that's on the only thing that can keep you safe on the roads.

"We see people not being able to slow down in time and then sliding into intersections and striking other cars, that's a very common accident on a day like today," said Brad Esler with the Superior Police and Traffice Bureau.

Both the Duluth and Superior Police department advises people to not travel unnecessarily, but if you must drive, there are a few things you can do to make your travel safer, such as recognizing that it may take you longer to stop at intersections.

"You need more traction year round here usually because of our weather conditions, our hills, etc... so we need more traction around here than most places need.." said Terry Pulling who works at Duluth Tire and Oil.

While the type of tire you have will vary with the car you drive, in Minnesota, it's a good idea to have a couple sets.

"But up here, we need probably two sets of tires. You probably need to run an all season in the summer and actual snow tires come winter because of the actual traction that is needed," said Pulling.

So weather you are going near or far, without proper tires, you should probably just stay put.

Duluth Tire and Oil is a family owned and operated mechanic shop and has been serving duluth for over 30 years.
