Madison, WI (NNCNOW.com) - The Wisconsin DNR has extended the period for the public to comment on Gogebic Taconite's preapplication process for the company's proposed mining project in Northwest Wisconsin.

The public now has until Sept. 17 to submit comments concerning the proposed mining activities in Ashland and Iron counties.

The deadline was originally Sept. 3.

DNR officials say they extended the deadline to give people additional time to consider the company's preapplication and description which outlines the potential mining project in the Penokee Hills.

Last week the DNR held a public hearing about GTac's plans for bulk sampling and the preapplication process.

The deadline to submit comments about the company's bulk sampling plans remains Sept. 3.
