BABBITT, MN (Northland's NewsCenter)--Folks in Babbitt will no longer have to travel miles to the nearest grocery store.

Zup's Grocery store will be open for business next Tuesday morning.

The owners of Zup's Grocery Store have been working to rebuild the town grocer after it burned to the ground in a fire, eight months ago.

"It was mostly surreal is what I felt," Kristi Zupancich, a family member said. "It felt like a family member died."

Store employees are stocking shelves, creating displays, and taking inventory to getting ready for the big opening day.

"All the shelves will be stocked exactly like you see in a picture," Ed Zupancich, the Owner of Zup's said. "The floors will be nice and shiny. The people are going to be here with a smile on their face waiting to help the customers who have supported us."

The new store is bigger, more energy efficient and includes expanded grocery, produce and meat sections.

"We've tripled our frozen food section because that is the biggest growth area in the grocery business," Ed Zupancich said.

After the fire, Zup's longtime pharmacist retired. Store owners are still looking to add a pharmacy, which will be located in the card section of the store.

"We put the electrical plumbing and everything in," Zupancich said. "If someone does come in, we are able to fill that void."

Meanwhile, folks say they plan to shop opening day and are excited to get the corner stone to their community back.

"The 1,300 residents that live here in Babbitt will be in full attendance to see what this looks like," Donald Negely, a local business owner said. "I know there is a lot of curiosity."

The stores grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration will take place on June 18, at 10 a.m.
