Lightning is among the leading causes of fire across the country.
Often those lightning sparked wildfires spread quickly, threatening structures including homes.
A lightning storm can bring more than bright streaks in the sky and rolling thunder. It can also spark major wildfires. And those fires can spread quickly endangering people and property.
So what steps can you take to protect your home should a lighting strike fire threaten your property?
Your first step should be to remove all combustibles like firewood, yard waste, grills, and fuel cans to a safe distance from your home.
Next close all your windows and doors to reduce drafts.
Shut off all natural gas or fuel supplies to your home.
And fill several large vessels with water to be ready to douse the blaze if it gets close to your home.
But all this is put aside if you're advised to evacuate. If they say leave...do it.
As a precaution, before an emergency looms, you should keep your brush and compost piles a safe distance from your house.
