Football is not just a game, but a commitment to a team; and in some cases, this team is like a second family. Every member of the team has a crucial role; from the young freshman on the sidelines cheering on the defense, to the quarterback who feels the pressure of the 3rd down. Football is a physical sport that brings a school together in the tradition of a Friday night game. This is especially true at PHS.
One tradition at PHS is the Hammer game, which often means extra and different preparation. Senior Nick Cosgriff said, “to prepare for the Hammer game we had hard physical and mental practices”.
Senior Griffin Swanson felt the Hammer game was emotional, and Nick Cosgriff said, “It was surreal”. Senior Brandon Morin felt that there was more team chemistry and preparation for the game this year. Senior Tyler Pionk brought the experience of the Hammer game into perspective when he said the game was the best experience of his high school career.
“It’s always nice to take the Hammer out of Hermantown and put it back where it’s supposed to be,” said head coach Derek Parendo, “Proctor is measured in Hammers and championships. The team won the hammer, now they just need to win the championship.”
Fans can’t help but get excited when the coach talks about the future of Proctor football.
Coach Parendo also sounded excited when he spoke of players like Brandon Morin and Nick Nylund as he said, “they did a great job [in the hammer game].”
Coach Parendo attributes winning the Hammer game to hard work at practice every day, and that is showing when they, “take it to the field.”
The goal for the team according to senior Alex Oachs is, “making it deep into playoffs.” He feels the team is close this year. They are all friends, which speaks a lot for the character of the team.
The Rails have a new offense and defense with many players changing positions, this year. Both helped to win Hammer this year. Who could ask for more than that?
