Todd Messner grinning ear to ear over a 16 point buck.

Son of a Swamp Buck

Here is Todd's story of the Biggest Buck Ever and It Charged HIm. "I was in my stand for 4 hours. It was a quiet Sunday morning. I tried to get the attention of the deer that were hiding around me so I rattled my antler bag twice followed by Buck Grunter calls. The woods remained quiet so I came down from my deer stand. I walked up a deer trail and found a large buck scrape. I gave the scrape a kick then thought I had startled a deer because I heard what I thought was a deer running away. A blink later I realized it wasn't running away it was coming at me.The sounds of the deer got louder as I heard it crashing through the woods, crossing a marsh, splashing through water, and jumping over a blow down of trees trying to get to what he thought was a rival buck. I had a momentary thought to step behind the nearest tree, but it wasn't near enough. I raised my gun. He was still coming at me at 23 yards when he raised his head up just enough, giving me a clean shot to the neck. One shot blew up a lung and severed its heart artery, turning the deer 90 degrees. It ran for another 45 yards and died. He didn't know what hit him and I don't know if he ever really saw me. This happened in all of about 1 minute but was the most exciting hunt I ever had. When he jumped out of the blow down right in front of me he looked to be about 800 lbs! The official record is 16 points, 203 lbs. 18 1/4" inside spread and 20" outside spread (antlers). That buck will feed my family for the winter and decorate my wall for a good story on a cold winter night".
