Pilot Dick Grabarkewitz and three participants from last year's event

Free airplane rides for kids June 18th

Local youngsters ages 8-17 can fly in an airplane for free on Saturday, June 18th as Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 412 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at the Grand Rapids airport.
The rally is part of the EAA Young Eagles Program, created to interest young people in aviation. Since the program was launched in 1992, Volunteer EAA pilots have flown more than 1.4 million young people who reside in more than 90 countries. Just in the past two years alone, pilots with the local EAA chapter have given around 300 rides to area youth.
“Part of our agenda is to show young people the possibilities that exist in aviation,” said Bill Puddicombe, local coordinator for the event. “During the ride, our pilots share information with the kids about the airplane itself, safety, as well as jobs associated with flying.”
Those attending the flight rally on Saturday, June 18th are asked come to the EAA hangar at the Grand Rapids airport, starting at 8 a.m. to register for their flight. Flights will begin at 8 a.m., with registration closing at noon. The local EAA chapter will also serve a breakfast for a small fee, beginning at 8 a.m.
