It's a cool spring morning on the shore of the St. Louis River. A six year old, Kai, his Uncle Mike and his Grandpa Joe take him fishing for the first time. A native of Arizona, he has never seen a river before, nor even held a fishing pole. Now that he lives in Minnesota, he asked his grandpa to take him fishing while on a trip to see his aunt and uncle in Duluth. A minute after he dropped his line in the water, he had a bite. We were hoping he would catch a little sunfish, or anything for that matter. This fish began pulling line off the reel of the Zebco 202. We immediately realized we were not prepared to land this fish. Thankfully a couple muskie fisherman had a net nearby and came to the rescue. Kai reeled in the fish while his uncle helped him hold the pole, because he wasn't big enough to hang on. We landed what appeared to be a 15 pound Northern. We tried to convince Kai to proudly hold his amazing first catch, but to no avail. It was one scary fish for a six year old, being nearly as big as he was. After we released it, we were going to put the line the water for a little while longer. Kai said, "Can we just catch small ones from now on?" Little did he know that people fish a lifetime for a catch like that.
