Ely's Peak Tunnel

Amazing Abandonded Railroad Tunnel

We were hiking on the Munger when we say a trail branch off of it. Curious we followed it to the top of Ely's Peak mountain, upon returning several days later, we noticed another trail leading down from the mountain, at the end of the trail we turned onto a larger path, surprised to see a old Railroad tunnel!!! It was very dark and ominous, the wind blowing through the tunnel in our faces, not being able to see the end. It ended up being about a football field long. I have returned there many times. The awe of the first time still not having worn away.

I think it's the former DWP Railway. The DWP used to have a smaller yard in West Duluth, located around 60-70TH Avenue West, and the tracks led from there, up the hill which in now the W.Munger trail. We used to lay track & pound spikes there.

I've wanted to get up there for a while. You can see it quite well from Google http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=46.678498,-92.251768&spn=0.005506,0.013937&t=k&z=17
