In summer 1979 my fiancé and I left Duluth to travel to my home town in England to get married. We wanted to bring my family something wonderful and unique from the Northland. Call us crazy, but we decided a Sammy’s pizza would travel 4,000 miles so my family could find out what a real pizza was all about. We ordered a family size pepperoni pizza, cooled it, wrapped it in several layers and froze it. Right before we left for the airport, we wrapped it in more layers and placed it in the center of our large suitcase.
When we checked our baggage, were told our flight would be delayed. Several hours into the delay, we were informed a replacement mechanical part was being flown in from across the country and “a few hours” turned into 12 hours. We had no idea where our suitcase was – remember, this was mid-summer! We were convinced our pizza would be ruined and imagined cheese melting across the entire contents of the suitcase! When we finally took off, our eight hour flight was followed by lines at the baggage carousel in London, more lines as we wound our way through immigration and customs and an hour car ride to my home town.
We held our breath as we peeled away the thick layers of packaging from our pizza. All those clothes proved to be great insulation as the masterpiece arrived in perfect condition – there were still ice crystals in the center!
Bearing in mind appliances are considerably smaller in England, the Sammy’s pizza barely fit into my mom’s oven but, with a little coaxing and folding at the edges, in it went. Before long, the magic smell of a hot Sammy’s pizza filled my mom’s kitchen in southern England. Needless to say, all those who had thought we were both nuts to bring it now wished we had brought more than one and asked “how far will Sammy’s deliver?”
That’s my Sammy’s story.
