Celebrating a birthday at Sammy's in West Duluth

Sammy's: The Gateway to Pizza Paradise

When I was a child growing up in Woodland in Duluth, Sammy's Pizza was a rare and very special treat. At that time, Sammy's Pizza was housed inside a bowling alley, and the only part of the restaurant that I could ever see as a child was a rectangular shaped window high above my head. I would look up and see light and steam streaming through, and smell the most wonderful aromas escaping from the window. As I watched, as if by magic, the finished pizza would be passed through the enchanted window, and we would be that much closer to our pizza paradise. The pizzas were wrapped up like a present inside of paper pizza bags. They were stapled shut to contain the wonderful heat and flavor of the thin, crispy crust, the unique sauce and the melted cheese. I would ride home in the car with the pizza balanced in my lap, the heat of the cardboard bottom warming my cold legs as we drove. At last we would be home and my father would slide out the pizza from the bag, and place it in the place of honor centered on the kitchen table. The first bite... Ahhhh - pizza nirvana!

They are the only ones that serve shrimp pizza!! They are the best. Every time we came back to Duluth for vacations or what ever, we always went to Sammy's the first night we arrive in town. AWESOME PIZZA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
