By Lindsy Wayt

“It's why we play the game. Anything is possible, anything can happen, and we proved that again tonight.” – Casey Korkus

Proctor soccer started as a club team funded by the community in 1991. Parents would provide the main funding for these clubs. Through the persistent determination of the people, soccer began to flourish. With expanding involvement, accomplishments, and hard work, the clubs were eventually established as official teams supported by the school in 1993.
Many challenges were faced when trying to develop this program. Some major challenges were establishing fields, funding, and skillful players. Many players came out to the field “raw,” meaning they had little or no experience with soccer. It took a lot of coaching, time, and perseverance to form strong teams. The people in the community itself played an influential part in establishing these things.
“Some of the major milestones were the simple things we usually take for granted now, like getting uniforms and bus rides,” said Glen Sorenson former teacher and coach of Proctor High School, “and then, of course, when the clubs actually became teams sponsored by the school. That was a major accomplishment.”
Sorenson was the first head coach for the Proctor Girls’ soccer team when it started in ’91. He then transitioned to head coach of the boys’ team once Jennifer Harnell took over the girls’. Proctor has been section champs 5 times in the past 12 years.
“What I love and miss about soccer is the beauty of the sport. I’ve played and held a passion for it since I was in high school. I miss playing and coaching it,” Sorenson said, “What I miss most though is just having fun with the players. Each team brought a lot of character. I look at past team photos and can pick out and remember great characters-many humorous characters. It was fun to be successful, but the practices, games, and just having fun with the team is what I enjoyed the most.”
From 1999, 2002, and to now, 19 years later from when it all started, Proctor High School’s Boys Soccer advances on to its third state tournament.. Proctor defeated Grand Rapids in the 7A section boys’ soccer championship. The Rails will take on the number one seeded Prairie Seeds Academy October 29, 2010 at Roseville Area High School at 5:30pm in the first round playoff. Sorenson’s advice for this year’s team is, “Don’t worry about the titles. You know that by working hard it is possible to achieve anything.” Good luck, Rails. Let’s keep making history in this great sport called soccer.

By Kim Sundstrom

An exciting and worthy thing has been decided for former teacher and coach of Proctor, Mr. Dave Hylla. Recently he has been accepted as a member of the MN football coaching association hall of fame. Mr. Parendo will be speaking on his behalf at the forty fifth annual football hall of fame banquet.
The MNFC has a large membership that has been around since the sixties. It’s an active group of coaches promoting past presidents of the association. Mr. Hylla was the leader of the All Star committee. To be in the hall of fame, a coach needs to have at least twenty years or more of coaching, which he had.
It is an unusual case that he brings forth, considering he is deceased, but everyone knows he deserves it. Mr. Hylla’s family gets a plaque for it, and the school is going to get a copy. The school will put it in a trophy case that is in honor of Hylla. It’s not made yet, but with the help of his daughter Ashley, they are making it this summer and it will be down in the main hallway by the gym.
Another plaque will be placed in honor of him in the Doubletree hotel/restaurant in St. Louis Park. At the dinner banquet, on Saturday, April 4, there are four inductees which will be brought into the hall of fame along with Hylla. These are DeWayne Johnson from Anoka, Dwight Lundeen from Becker, Mike Mahlen from Verndale, and in the college division, Roger French from Brigham Young University.
Each makes a small speech, and for Hylla, Mr. Parendo will be speaking. There are also other awards like coach of the year in each coaching level and Assistant Coach of the year awards, which Parendo has gotten before.
It’s quite an honor for Hylla because it’s such a huge reward. We are all proud of him for all he has done for our school and us, and this is one way to show our appreciation.

On January 30th, Katy Mickelson gave a remarkable performance on the basketball court against Eveleth Gilbert. She scored 16 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, completed 10 assists, and had 10 steals.
This performance makes her the first girl in Proctor history to achieve what is known as a “quadruple double.” Only 12 other girls in the state have managed to score double digits in four aspects of the game. So Mickelson definitely deserves some recognition.
Mickelson’s head coach Mr. Brian Masterson said, “Katy played unreal and amazing. She had her hands on every loose ball. She played one of the best basketball games I have ever seen, and the best girl’s basketball performance I have ever seen.”

Out of all the pictures that the Mallet staff took this year of the Proctor football team, I think this is one of my favorites. It is simple and yet seems to say volumes about the team this year. Many people know about the passing of Mr. Dave Hylla, even though the football season is over, he is still missed in our halls here at PHS and his influence as a teacher is missed greatly.

After having a record of 20-5-2 last season, the PHM girls hockey team is looking forward to having a good year. The team lost 6 seniors total last year including Brooke Morin and Sarah Edgerton. The team has many returning starters which includes Julia Gilbert who led the team in points last year with 53. The team in total is returning 3 lines and 2 pairs of defense. About 33 girls tried out this year and the team has already been picked. Teacher and head coach of the girls team Glen Gilderman is hoping to have another successful season and maybe even compete in state. Gilderman has picked 3 captains who are Elly Power, Jami Weiss and our own Bekah Norton. Becca is planning on going to state this year. “We have a really close team despite all going to different schools” Bekah said. The team has added a new member to the team from Silver Bay named Sam Downy. Bekah thinks that she will help out the team. Also goalie Katy Gilderman is hurt due to a knee injury but hopes to return in mid December. Bekah says she is looking forward to “killing” some teams this year. The girls have one of the toughest schedules in the state. They are playing Anoka, Wyzetta, Eden Prairie, and many other city teams. Some tough local schools include Grand Rapids, Duluth, and Cloquet. The girls have been practicing hard and are going to work as they move closer and closer to state.

Hi, my name is Peter Billman. I am 15 and i love photography and sports. I went to the Proctor vs. New London Spicers game in St. Cloud. Throughout the whole game, it rained and snowed. The fans, the football team, and especially the chearleaders had to sit through the game. This just goes to show that Proctor is a strong, well-built, patient team. We will have our game... I know it!
