My name is Bob Peterson and I have season tickets to the UMD Bulldog hockey games, and have for years!! Why doesn’t Duluth support its home college TV by carrying the away games instead of home games?? Am I missing something here or what?? It makes more sense to me, and almost all of the people I have spoken to about this, and they have the same sentiments as I do! Televising away games and not home games would get a larger fan base and fill the Amsoil Arena seats, after all they are in number “one” place and won the national colligate championship last year! Why doesn’t Duluth support UMD??? St. Cloud and Mankato seem to support their home team more then Duluth?? Who in heavens name makes the decision to not support No. 1 UMD men’s hockey?? Can you answer that please?? I’m very sure, I’m not alone with the curiosity about Duluth’s non-support of their home Team??

What does it take to be a boxer? To lace up your gloves, step between the ropes and enter a haven where precision combinations, executive timing and controlled adrenaline are the keys to success. For young ladies at Lorenzi's Gym located at 19th Avenue West and Superior Street in Duluth, it's a type on bond unexplainable to those on the outside of the ropes. Boxing is often viewed as a male sport. A sport 'too tough' for women. The reality is boxing is a multi-tasking sport. Thinking ahead to your next combination before you even land the first punch, constant moving, adjusting to your opponent. Being fearless. The ladies at Lorenzi's break the typical boxer persona. Their hardwork, dedication, love for the sport and most importantly, their love for one another is unmatched.

With all the recent media coverage surrounding men's boxing, it has overshadowed a growing population in boxing. Girls and Women. At Lorenzi's gym on 19th Ave West and Superior Street, we have women and young ladies who train right along side the male fighters. Our youngest members are 15, our oldest 34. We have a diverse group. Native American, Hispanic, African American and Caucasion, women of all colors and sizes lacing up their gloves. The reasons for their hardwork and sweat range from self defense to fitness. In the near future, some will even compete at an amateur level. These young ladies and women are inspirations among a male dominated sport.

22nd Biennial Trans Superior International Yacht Race – 2011

A RACE FOR SERIOUS SAILORS

The 22nd biennial running of the Trans Superior International Yacht Race will start Saturday, August 6th, 2011 at 1300 EST in Whitefish Bay, near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The 338 nautical mile, often argued the Longest Freshwater Race in the world, will finish in Duluth, Minnesota, USA, near the entrance to the Duluth Ship Canal in Duluth.

Yachts are required to leave Copper Harbor, Michigan to port. Yachts may pass through or around the Apostle Islands. The official race distance is 338 Nautical Miles. We expect the 24 Boats and approximately 83 crew members to be finishing late Sunday eve through late Wednesday eve.

The fleet is divided into groups or sections based on rating. Each section is comprised of 2-15 boats of similar ratings. Each section starts the race at a specific time. A horn is fired at the specific start time for each section. The objective is to cross the starting line under full sail immediately after the starting gun for your section is fired. Boats crossing the starting line too early are required to turn back and restart — a significant penalty.

The event is organized by the Duluth Yacht Club in conjunction with the Algoma Sailing Club in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada. Both crewed and single-handed boats are register for the Trans Superior International Yacht Race. To date, Our largest Sailing Vessel, Stripes, a Santa Cruz 70 from Ann Arbor, MI. Our Smallest Sailing Vessel and local favorite is Indigo, a J29 from Duluth, MN.

The boats will race around the clock until they reach the Duluth Shipping Canal; so sailing at night is required. Running lights and lighted instruments are required for navigation and safety. Additionally, the crew will work in shifts, or "watches," so that there is time for sleeping, eating, etc.

The Trans Superior has been held every odd year since 1969. The race is also part of the Lake Superior Yachting Association off-shore series and is the longest point to point fresh water race held biennially. The race was first organized by Duluth sailor Jack Soetebier and Dr. John Pierpoint from White Pine, Michigan. The two men set up the race as a challenge to themselves and other Lake Superior sailors.
